Rainy Season Pet Care: 5 Tips
The rainy months in Metro Manila are hard on pets in ways that are easy to miss. Most of what we treat this time of year traces back to one thing — moisture that never fully dries. Here are five habits our veterinarians recommend keeping until the rains ease off.
1. Dry them off properly, every time
Don't just wipe the top coat. Towel your pet down as soon as they come in and work through the paws and between the toes, the underbelly, and inside the ears — the spots that stay wet longest. Damp fur trapped against skin is where fungal and bacterial infections get started, and ear infections almost always begin with water that was never dried out.
2. Keep them out of puddles and floodwater
Standing water is not just dirty, it's a genuine health risk. It carries bacteria, it's where leptospirosis spreads, and it's a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Walk around puddles rather than through them, and if your street floods regularly, ask us about the leptospirosis vaccine — it's the single best protection during these months.
3. Stay ahead of ticks and fleas
Humidity and warmth are ideal breeding conditions, so parasite populations climb quickly once the rains settle in. Whatever preventive treatment your pet is on, the important part is staying on schedule — a dose given late leaves a gap that's more than enough for an infestation to take hold.
4. Keep the sleeping area dry and off the floor
Check that bedding is clean, completely dry, and raised off cold concrete or tile. A pet sleeping on damp bedding night after night is more prone to stiff, aching joints, coughing, and breathing trouble — and older pets feel it first.
5. Keep vaccines and deworming current
Constant damp is a strain on your pet's natural defences, which is exactly when gaps in protection start to matter. Make sure vaccinations and deworming are up to date, and talk to us before starting any immune-boosting supplement so we can confirm it's safe for your pet.
Anything worrying you — a cough that won't settle, itching, a skin patch that looks angry — is easier to treat early.
